What to have ready for a quote

Questions to ask any steel contractor

  • What standards do you weld and fabricate to?
  • Who will be on site and what are their qualifications?
  • How will you manage hot work and lifting?
  • What records will I receive at handover?
  • Can you show me similar completed work?

Steel glossary

Fabrication
Cutting, shaping, fitting and welding steel into components, usually in a workshop.
Erection
Lifting, positioning, aligning and fixing fabricated steel on site.
Value engineering
Reviewing design, materials and method to keep performance while cutting cost or time.
WPS (welding procedure specification)
A written procedure that says how a weld will be made, including process, consumables, and heat input.
NDT (non-destructive testing)
Inspection methods, such as visual, magnetic particle, dye penetrant or ultrasonic, that check welds without damaging them.
Hot work
Any work that creates sparks, flame or heat, such as welding or cutting. It needs controls and often a permit.
Screw pile
A steel shaft with helical plates that is screwed into the ground to form a foundation.
ABS
American Bureau of Shipping, a marine classification society whose rules apply to some vessel repairs.
Portal frame
A rigid steel frame of columns and rafters commonly used for warehouses and sheds.
Principal contractor
The main contractor with overall responsibility for a site.
